Bathroom Tile and Flooring in Herndon

Bathroom tile has to handle standing water, steam and daily cleaning, not just foot traffic. Bathroom Brigade removes the old tile and flooring, waterproofs wet areas and installs tile chosen for where it goes.

Tile in our Herndon remodel

The walk-in shower in our Herndon bathroom remodel is finished in clean blue tile. A color like that is a real commitment, and it works because the rest of the room gives it space. If you are drawn to a bold shower color, we usually suggest keeping the floor and vanity quieter so the shower reads as the feature.

What goes behind the tile matters most

Grout and most tile are not waterproof on their own. What keeps water out of the wall is the layer behind the tile. Bathroom Brigade uses Schluter Systems waterproofing, including Kerdi-Shower kits and Kerdi-Board, in shower and tub areas. When you compare bids for bathroom remodeling in Herndon, ask each contractor what they put behind the shower tile and get it in writing.

Choosing tile by location

Shower walls

Larger wall tiles mean fewer grout lines to scrub. Smaller formats, patterns like herringbone and mosaics take more labor and grout but add texture. A built-in niche saves you from a hanging caddy.

Shower floors

Smaller tiles, or tiles cut to follow the slope, give better footing and let the floor pitch to the drain. A linear drain allows larger floor tile and pairs well with a curbless entry.

Bathroom floors

Porcelain is dense and well suited to bathroom floors. Look for a finish with some texture so the floor is not slick when wet. If cold tile in winter bothers you, Schluter Ditra-Heat can add a heated floor, planned together with the electrical work.

What is included

  • Removal of existing tile and flooring
  • Waterproofing in wet areas
  • Shower surround, floor and backsplash tile
  • Material selection sized for daily bathroom use

We install Daltile porcelain and ceramic lines, among others; bring photos of anything you like and we will talk through whether it suits the location.

Planning the tile layout

Before tile goes up, we plan where the cuts land. A good layout avoids thin slivers at the ceiling, the corners and around the niche, centers the pattern on the window or the vanity, and lines up the floor and wall grout where they meet. It is invisible when done well and obvious when it is not. If you have chosen a pattern such as herringbone or a vertical stack, expect a little more time and material, because more tiles are cut.

Old floors in older Herndon homes

When we lift an older bathroom floor, we sometimes find a mortar bed, layers of vinyl over tile, or soft subfloor near the toilet. None of that is visible from the surface, which is why our scopes spell out how concealed conditions are handled. Fairfax County lists tile and flooring replacement among work that does not need a county permit, but repairing framing or moving the toilet drain is a different matter.

Can you tile over the existing floor?▸

Sometimes, but we rarely recommend it in a bathroom. Removing the old layers lets us check the subfloor and keeps the floor height from creating a lip at the door.

What tile is easiest to keep clean?▸

Larger tiles with fewer grout lines and a matte or lightly textured glazed finish are easiest. Ask about grout options during selection too.

Do you install heated bathroom floors?▸

Yes, using Schluter Ditra-Heat. It is planned with the electrical work so the circuit and thermostat are in the right place.

Does tile work need a permit in Herndon?▸

Tile alone often does not, but work that moves plumbing, adds circuits or repairs framing can. We confirm with the Town or the county for your address.
